Give thanks – Day 25

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” (Plato)

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single person in possession of a good ear must be in want of a melody. ;) It is true that music can connect people, and often can help us to acknowledge the emotions we are experiencing when we can’t find the words to describe it. Sometimes when I am feeling angry I put on some appropriate music, maybe music with a strong, angry-sounding beat, some rap perhaps, and it can help me to firstly acknowledge my emotions and then avoid reacting to them in a negative, or unhealthy way, because it can be very satisfying to listen to an appropriate music genre. Other than the way that music can help to modulate emotions, it is an amazing tool to worship God. When people hear the word ‘Worship’ unfortunately the main thing that comes to mind is singing. This isn’t wrong, but it is far from complete. We are not called to simply worship him on a Sunday morning in the church service. We are called to worship with every breath He gives us, with each day we are blessed with and each and every word and deed that we choose to say or do whilst we are here on earth. Father God, thank you for the beautiful gift of music, thank you for the way it can touch our lives, bring people together, but most importantly the way we can use it to worship you and tell you how much we love you. Father God I pray that we would never substitute true worship for a couple of hymns on a Sunday, but that we would ‘offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You- this is our true and proper worship’ (Romans 12:1)
